rPET Shopping Bags: What Recycled Content Really Means

"rPET" is one of the most confidently used and least verified words in bag sourcing. Buyers put it in a brief expecting a recycled bag; factories hear a fibre name and quote recycled polyester; the certificate arrives, and nobody checks whether it covers the order in front of them.

This page separates the three claims that get mixed together — recycled content, recyclability and certification — and sets out what to ask for so the recycled story you tell your customers is one you can document.

What rPET actually is

rPET is recycled polyethylene terephthalate. Post-consumer bottles are collected, sorted, washed and processed into flake, then into regenerated fibre. That fibre is woven or knitted into fabric and made into bags the same way virgin polyester is.

The important consequence: rPET fabric behaves like polyester, not like a separate material. It takes heat-transfer and sublimation printing well, it is strong for its weight, and it does not breathe like cotton. What changes is the input, not the performance.

Three claims that are not the same claim

Claim

What it means

What usually happens in practice

Recycled content

The fibre was made partly or wholly from recovered material

Often stated as a percentage, frequently unverified

Recyclable

The bag can re-enter a recycling stream at end of life

True of most mono-material polyester, but says nothing about where the bag was made from

Certified recycled

Chain-of-custody documented by an independent standard

Requires a transaction certificate covering your specific order, not just a logo

A bag can be recyclable without containing any recycled material, and it can contain recycled material without any certificate. Marketing copy routinely blurs all three. If your customers ask for proof, only the third column survives scrutiny.

The documentation chain, and where it breaks

The Global Recycled Standard (GRS) is the certification most often referenced for recycled polyester textiles. It works as a chain of custody: the recycler, the fibre producer, the fabric mill, the bag factory and often the trading company each hold a scope certificate, and each sale passes a transaction certificate (TC) down the chain stating the quantity and recycled percentage.

The failure point is almost never the fibre producer. It is the last hop. A factory can hold a valid scope certificate and still ship an order whose fabric came from an uncertified mill, because the scope certificate proves they are capable of handling certified material, not that this shipment was.

Practical rule: ask for the transaction certificate that names your order quantity, your fabric and the date. If the answer is a PDF of a certificate with no order reference, the documentation stops one step short of your bag.

Where rPET disappoints buyers

Shade consistency. Feedstock varies. Natural rPET is often slightly warmer or greyer than virgin polyester, and batch-to-batch variation is wider than with virgin fibre. If your brand colour is fixed, specify it against a physical standard and ask for the fabric to be dyed to it, not matched by eye.

Strength at light weights. Thin rPET can be less consistent than virgin fibre of the same weight because the recycled input is not uniform. On bags carrying real load, going up one weight band is usually cheaper than discovering the problem at the handle.

Cost. Certified recycled fibre carries a premium over virgin, and the premium moves with the recycled-flake market rather than with oil. Quotes on rPET have a shorter shelf life than quotes on virgin polyester.

Specifying recycled content properly

What to write in the brief

Why it matters

Recycled percentage, by weight of fibre

"Recycled" alone ranges from a token blend to 100%

The standard you will accept

GRS, RCS or an equivalent with chain of custody

Transaction certificate per shipment

Proves this order, not the factory's general capability

Whether the certificate must accompany the shipping documents

Deciding it after shipment is too late to fix

Colour standard for the fabric itself

Recycled fibre shade drift is the most common complaint

Printing on rPET

Because rPET is polyester, it takes sublimation and heat-transfer printing better than cotton or canvas does, which makes full-colour artwork practical without a screen per colour. Silkscreen still works for solid spot colours and is cheaper at volume. What does not work is assuming a print method approved on cotton will behave identically here; the printing methods comparison covers the difference.

What to send for an accurate quote

Send bag style, finished size, fabric weight, recycled percentage and the standard you require, print method and artwork, quantity per colour, and whether certificates must ship with the goods. Our RFQ template includes a recycled-content line for exactly this reason, and the price driver breakdown shows where the recycled premium sits in the total.

Questions buyers ask before ordering

Is rPET more environmentally friendly than cotton?

There is no single answer, and anyone who gives you one is simplifying. Recycled polyester avoids virgin polymer production and keeps bottles out of waste, but it is still a plastic that sheds microfibres and is not biodegradable. Cotton is renewable and biodegradable but is water- and land-intensive to grow. The comparison depends on which impact you are managing, and it is worth stating your position rather than asserting a winner.

Can rPET be recycled again?

Mono-material rPET fabric can re-enter polyester recycling in principle. Laminated, coated or mixed-material bags are much harder to process, which is why lamination is the usual reason a "recycled" bag is not actually recyclable.

Does rPET cost more than virgin polyester?

Usually yes, and the gap tracks the recycled-flake market rather than oil prices. Ask for a quote validity period — recycled pricing moves faster than virgin.

How do I know the certificate is genuine?

Check that the certificate number appears in the issuing body's public database, that the scope covers the material you bought, and that a transaction certificate exists for your order quantity. A logo on a website proves nothing.

Where this fits on our line

We produce custom rPET recycled reusable shopping bags, tested to a 10 kg load, alongside recyclable shopping bags and the wider reusable shopping bag range.

If your programme has to satisfy a retail compliance check rather than a marketing claim, start with what changed for US retail in 2026. To discuss a recycled-content specification, use the contact form and tell us the percentage and standard you need.
